A Consulting Forester Is Not:
  • a timber or log buyer
  • a logging contractor
  • a mill representative

What is the distinguishing factor here?

Foresters specialize in dealing with growing trees in communities known as forests. By education and experience they develop knowledge and skills related to forest communities.

A consulting forester works for the landowner or other client. The consulting forester's goal is to advise the best course of action to pursue the landowner's goals and achieve their objectives. One of these objectives may be the generation of wealth from the harvest of timber. The consulting forester can assist the landowner in conducting a timber sale to obtain the maximum value for their timber by offering the sale to a number or prospective buyers. At the same time protecting the landowners concerns over the effects of logging on their property.

A consulting forester may charge either a single fee or a percentage of sale proceeds for their services. Landowners profit from obtaining the maximum price for their timber while maintaining site quality. Buyers of timber profit from obtaining wood volume for the lowest overall price. Competitive bid timber sales bring the landowners top dollar while supporting the most efficient and quality timber harvesters and mill operators.
