What is GIS

A geographic information system (GIS) is a computer-based information system designed for the input, manipulation, management, and analysis of spatial (geographic) data. Components of a GIS include: hardware, software (GIS and a Relational Database Management system (RDBMS)), data, methods, and people. A GIS models the real world as a series of 'layers' that are linked together by geography. GIS allows for the analysis of geographic relationships between the features stored in the data layers.
